Who can study this course?

All students from the University of Wollongong can use this qualification to gain 6 non-specific credits at a first year level.

  • Please note: students on a student Visa are not able to access this course.

What can I do with this qualification?

Use this qualification as an entrance level to the laboratory and collecting services of a Pathology company either private or public.

Use the practical skills you will learn to enhance your employment opportunities.

What are the rates of pay?

The rates vary from company to company private sector to public sector.

Support Services Staff:

1. Pathology Collector casual rate – $26.54 / hour weekdays & $36.35 / Hour weekends

2. Laboratory assistants casual rate – $24.41 / hour weekdays &$33.38 weekends

Health Professionals with a degree (starting rate)

Full Time – $24.33 / hour

On call each shift $28 / on call Sunday – $54 / shift loading 15% / Saturday loading 50% / Sunday loading 50% / overtime loading 50% / casual loading 25%

Where can I do it?

Southern. IML Pathology is a nationally Registered Training Organisation.They have a Smart and Skilled contract with the Department of Education and Training NSW.

Many UOW students have been and are presently employed in our local laboratory and collection centres. Many science graduates have started in the laboratory as laboratory assistants until positions as scientists have become available.

Course Structure

To successfully complete HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection you need to:

  • Complete all theory on line
  • As you complete the theory for a group of units you may attend a one day workshop to complete the practical competency for those units
  • You will need to be able to successfully collect 20 venous blood collections from patient / volunteers . To facilitate this if you can find people to volunteer it will happen faster for you.
  • We estimate that you will requires 6 workshop days for the perform blood venous blood collection. Venous collection workshops will be held Monday to Friday every week. You may attend as many practical venepuncture days as required to complete the successful venous blood collections.
  • You also need to attend one day workshops for the following:

  • CHCDIV001 – Work with diverse people
  • HLTWHS001 – Participate in workplace health and safety
  • CHCCOM005 – Communicate and work in health or community services
  • BSBCUS201 – Deliver a service to customers
  • HLTAAP001 – Recognise healthy body systems
  • BSBMED301 – Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
  • HLTINF006 – Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control

  • HLTPAT004  – Collect pathology specimens other than blood

  • HLTCAR001 – Perform Electrocardiography (ECG)
  • HLTPAT001 – Identify and respond to clinical risks in pathology collection
  • HLTAID011 – Perform First Aid (workshop run every Monday)

Workshop 4
  • HLTHPS004 – Measure spirometry
 Held Thursday
Workshop 5
  • HLTPAT002 – Perform venous blood collections
  • HLTPAT006 – Receive, prepare and dispatch pathology specimens

 

 Held Friday
Workshop 6  Successful venous blood collections  Held Monday to Friday
